Many people have concerns about some of the non-plant-based chemicals, such as DEET, that are used in most repellents. In addition to potential health concerns, DEET melts plastic (goodbye tent or rain jacket) and also repels fish. For many people, a plant-based repellent is an effective, sensible choice.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, DEET, which is the most common repellent, is safe when used as directed. DEET can cause some side effects if used in excessive amounts, including skin reactions and eye irritation, and in rare cases, neurological and respiratory effects. This is one of the reasons that many families choose a plant-based repellent instead of DEET.

Buzz Away Extreme is made from a variety of plant-based essential oils that insects find to be unpleasant or confusing. They deter insects from landing, or possibly confuse the insect so that it is unable to land. These oils may also serve to mask human scents, which naturally attract biting insects.

It has been tested against and shown to effectively protect against mosquitoes and ticks.
