Tips to Help Reduce Cold Sore Outbreaks

Cold sores are uncomfortable and embarrassing-looking fluid-filled blisters that form as a result of carrying the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Although cold sores usually form on the lips and near your mouth, they can also be found in other parts of the body such as the nose, eyes, and genital area.

As a cold sore develops, the infected area may burn and itch. And although it’ll look like there’s an irritation on your mouth or lip, it’ll fade once the cold sore bursts and starts to scab.

While anyone can get a cold sore at any age, outbreaks tend to be more common among people that are younger than 35. Since the virus is carried in saliva, someone can develop a cold sore by doing things such as sharing cutlery, lip balms, lipsticks, and towels. The virus could also be transmitted by kissing.

Cold sore symptoms also tend to be mild. However, once you’ve caught the HSV-1 virus, it remains in your system indefinitely. Although the virus may be dormant, a cold sore can be activated by numerous triggers. This includes illnesses like a severe cold or flu, extreme exhaustion, and stress. Hormonal changes such as menopause, pregnancy, and menstruation can also attribute to a cold sore outbreak. Additionally, cold sores can be triggered by an intense sunburn and severe hot to cold temperature changes.

Tips to Reduce Cold Sore Outbreaks

Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce any pain or discomfort you might be experiencing as a result of getting a cold sore.

Avoid acidic foods such as citrus juices, food heavy in vinegar (i.e.: pickles, kimchi, olives), tomatoes, soda, wine, and alcohol.

Use a cold compress or towel for 5 to 10 minutes, up to a few times a day, to ease any pain or discomfort you might be experiencing as a result of the cold sore. In order to prevent the spread of the cold sore virus, remember to keep the towel or compress clean too.

Prevent your lips from getting chapped by using sunscreen and lip balm. By taking this precaution, you’ll be protecting your lips from sunburn while helping facilitate the healing process.
