Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers, are small, shallow lesions that develop in the soft tissues of the mouth or at the base of the gums. The exact cause of these sores is not well understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to their development. These include minor mouth injuries from dental work, aggressive tooth brushing, or accidental cheek bites; stress; hormonal changes; and dietary deficiencies, particularly of B vitamins, zinc, folic acid, and iron. Certain foods — including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables — can trigger a sore or worsen the condition. Additionally, some cases of canker sores might be linked to an underlying health condition, such as a compromised immune system.

Yes, cold sores and canker sores are different. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and typically appear on the lips, around the mouth, and on the face. They are contagious. Canker sores, however, are not caused by a virus and are not contagious. They occur inside the mouth, usually as small, shallow ulcers, and are often triggered by factors such as stress, minor injury to the inside of the mouth, food sensitivities, and vitamin deficiencies.
